FLEXlm, developed by Macrovision Corporation, is a widely used software license management system designed to help independent software vendors and enterprises control, distribute, and monitor access to licensed applications. Often embedded into engineering, CAD/EDA, and scientific tools, FLEXlm enables both node-locked and floating (concurrent) licensing so organizations can share license pools efficiently across teams and sites. It operates through a lightweight client library and a network-based license server (lmgrd) that works with vendor-specific daemons, using digitally signed license files to validate entitlements. Administrators can configure policies, track usage, and maintain uptime through redundancy and borrowing options, while users connect transparently from supported platforms including Windows, Linux, and UNIX. FLEXlm later evolved into what is commonly known as FlexNet Publisher.
